The course of scientific research without a state.

A question I’ve been pondering for some time is what would scientific research look like without state funding. It’s about the only excuse I can find for a state anymore.

University and college faculty would likely continue researching for paycheck’s sake from their institutions. And there is some money in publishing research or writing books. But how much funding does the state directly/indirectly give to leading academic researchers?

What about researchers not employed by colleges? Most other scientists are government employees.

The entire health care industry has a stake in furthering medical study, but this is only one portion of all scientific fields. Medical advances occur with a combination of cross-field studies and breakthroughs in other scientific fields. Almost no medical technology today was created without findings from other fields of study.

Modern society can not function without research. How would the market organize science? I haven’t really found much to read on this subject. Thoughts?

I’m considering dumping my social life to better this blog again.

Jonathan Haidt, “On the Moral Roots of Liberals and Conservatives” at TED.

An interesting look at the psychological aspects that influence our social/cultural moral beliefs. I find moral and political psychology to be a lacking field. Understanding how we form our moral standards is helpful in studying social sciences.

The Kony Kollection
At the beginning of the documentary we see Jason Russell tell a crowd of young people that they must STAND AGAINST WAR. By the end of the documentary, he advocates MILITARY INTERVENTION*. Perhaps we should think about this a little more deeply.

It’s something we’ve been addressing internally, focusing on getting all staff and supporters on the same page in regards to the language they use in their communications.”

“Only 32% went to direct services (page 6), with much of the rest going to staff salaries, travel and transport, and film production. This is far from ideal for an issue which arguably needs action and aid, not awareness, and Charity Navigator rates their accountability 2/4 stars because they lack an external audit committee. But it goes way deeper than that.”

What can libertarians learn from Aristotle?

(via marketorder-deactivated20120326)

"It was John Maynard Keynes, a man of great intellect but limited knowledge of economic theory, who ultimately succeeded in rehabilitating a view long the preserve of cranks with whom he openly sympathised. He had attempted by a succession of new theories to justify the same, superficially persuasive, intuitive belief that had been held by many practical men before, but that will not withstand rigorous analysis of the price mechanism: just as there cannot be a uniform price for all kinds of labour, an equality of demand and supply of labour in general cannot be secured by managing aggregate demand."

Help rename my blog!

I’m bored with the blog’s title now. I’d like something more interesting, and still (sort of) politically associated. Have any ideas?

That awkward moment when

I really started to like Mikhail Bakunin, and then I found his disgusting anti-Semitic writing. Sigh…
